How I Work

Detective Jeremy Burns

Location:
The Kanawha County Sheriff's Office located in Charleston, WV

Current Gig:
Deputy Sheriff / Detective / Digital Forensics Examiner

Current Mobile Device:
Apple iPhone 4s and Apple iPad3 GSM

Current Computer:
I utilized two Digital Intelligence Forensic Recovery of Evidence Devices (FRED's for short). One unit contains a Raid 5 array of 20 terabytes of storage space. My main machine for doing day to day activities is a 27" Apple iMac. When going into the field for search warrants I always take with me a 15" Apple Macbook Pro as well as a set of Tableau Write Blockers.

One Word that best describes how you work:
Overworked

What apps/software/tools can't you live without?
I would be lost without AccessData's Forensic Toolkit (FTK) and Guidance Software's Encase when it comes to conducting forensic examinations on suspect hard drives. I also make sure to first always process a hard drive with Magnet Forensics Internet Evidence Finder which is an excellent tool for finding quickly and easily evidence that would require extensive searching using other methods.
When it comes to dealing with cellphones and GPS devices, I utilize a UFED Cellebrite Touch Ultimate and a few tools I'd have to kill you if I told you about.

What's your workspace like?
I have a wrap around three tier desk with overhead storage space. I surround myself with as many monitors as I can find because nothing aids better in multitasking then multiple desktops. Also installed a 5.1 1000watt surround sound system for the fun of it.

How I Work

What's your best time-saving trick?
When I receive a hard drive in regards to a case, I prefer to get the hard drive imaged, stored, and processed to await for when I have time to conduct further analysis. That way the physical device can be quickly stored into evidence (and out of my way) or can be returned to the owner if it belongs to a victim or witness.

What's your favorite to-do list manager?
I keep a record of the items I take in and take out using a spreadsheet on Microsoft Excel. But when it comes to taking notes of what I have done on a specific case I will utilize Forensic Case Notes by QCC Digital Forensic Laboratories.

Besides your phone and computer, what gadget can't you live without?
My Doctor Who USB hub, nothing like hearing the TARDIS warming up when inserting a thumb drive.

What everyday thing are you better at than anyone else?
Probably sarcasm

What are you currently reading?
Most people think that just because I work with computers that I keep my nose in software manuals and comic books. Well I prove them wrong, it's usually just comic books.

What do you listen to while you work?
It all depends on the mood and the amount of stress I am under, Skrillex usually helps make the day go by quicker though.

Are you more of an introvert or an extrovert?
Oh introvert by choice, extrovert by environment.

What's your sleep routine like?
Horrible, I stress out alot about my work load.

Fill in the blank: I'd love to see ______ answer these same questions?
Deadpool

What's the best advice you've ever received?
"Attitude is everything, take your place in life" I used to work at a theatre in college and a drunk woman put her hands on my shoulders and stated this to me nose to nose. I wrote it down and kept it in my wallet for years. One day after eating Chinese food, I opened a fortune cookie and found this saying. I came to the conclusion that the stars aligned and fate was reminding me of this drunken conversation years ago......that or the drunk woman had Chinese before coming the to movies that night.

Is there anything else you'd like to add?

I am an active member of the West Virginia Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force as well as a founding member of the FBI West Virginia Cyber Crimes Task Force.

In 2013, I wrote a law that dealt specifically with minors and sexting in the state of West Virginia. (WV Code: 61-8C-3b)

Recently I had the once in a lifetime opportunity to be in a movie, so in April 2014, catch me in Captain America 2: The Winter Soldier....I'll be the third guy from the left.
